The Cederberg Wilderness Area is only 220 km from Cape Town and falls within the world-renowned Fynbos Biome.

This 71 000-ha mountain complex is managed by Cape Nature Conservation principally for the conservation of pure, silt-free water of this catchment area. Partly because it is one of the few recreation areas in the country where visitors can enjoy the ‘wilderness experience’ and as a sanctuary for the biodiverse Cape fynbos.

On our hike, we will look for the exquisite Snow Protea (Protea cryophilla)  – a magnificent plant with flowering cones the size of the King Protea. Instead of being predominantly red, it is beautiful, snowy white and is 130 – 160 mm in diameter. The Snow Protea grows exclusively in isolated parts of the Cederberg Wilderness Area and grows mainly in a small belt of about 25 km. Endemic to the Cederberg, Snow Proteas are found nowhere else in the world.

Due to the rugged terrain, the Cedarberg Mountains are completely unspoilt by tourism. The mountains are covered almost exclusively by pristine fynbos dotted with some isolated remaining Cedar trees. Unique and rare fynbos endemics are found here such as the Snow Protea, rocket pincushion and the Clanwilliam Cedar. Our hike will take off from the big oak trees at Welbedacht farm, climbing up the Welbedacht Kloof, amongst magnificent rock formations, to Welbedacht cave. From there we will take the jeep track along ‘Die Trap’ back to Driehoek.
