Set in the Karoo Midlands Baviaanskloof, derived from the Dutch ‘valley of baboons’ is a deep twisting ravine walled between the Baviaans and the Kouga mountain ranges.
Nature has taken its course over thousands of years to create what is today universally recognized as the Baviaanskloof World Heritage Site. Pristine nature, narrow gorges with flowing streams, steep mountain passes, vast plains inhabited by an abundance of bird and animals roaming on waving grasslands, amazing views of unspoilt wilderness. Few other places in the world hold evidence of the footprint of human history spanning over a million years. The Baviaans area encircles the Karoo towns of Willowmore and Steytlerville.
The prolific road-building pioneer, Thomas Bain, who can be credited with the planning and construction of more than 900 km of roads and mountain passes in South Africa, masterminded the creation of the road which allows us to journey through one of South Africa’s most protected areas. Eco Ventures invites you to join us in search of the keys to open the jewel of the Baviaanskloof.

You will marvel at the beautiful rock formations found in the Nuwekloof Pass, considered to be the official entry from the west into the Baviaanskloof.
It is in this ‘Kloof‘, where you have to find your clues to discover where your overnight accommodation will be. This stretch of the route will take us to pass, and sometimes even walk through spectacular rock formations, in search of the ‘Lock of the Kloof’.
